A simple and effective remedy for avoid tearing up when cutting onions consists of working them directly under a jet of cold running water, preferably in the kitchen sink.
The reason onions make you cry is due to the release of volatile sulfur compounds that, upon contact with the eyes, cause irritation and tearing. Running water performs a dual function: on the one hand, it cools the onion, slowing the release of these compounds, and on the other, it immediately washes them away, preventing them from reaching the eyes.
To apply the method correctly, simply place a cutting board in or on the edge of the sink, letting a trickle of cold water run. As you chop the onions, the irritants are diluted and eliminated, allowing you to work more comfortably and without discomfort.
Thanks to this simple trick, cutting onions becomes much more practical and quicker, without the inconvenience of tears.
